| Vacuum cleaning is such a chore to me that I would make excuses to defer it until there is enough dirt on the floor to become an eyesore or a potential health risk (or just before in-law's visit). When I was given the opportunity to try the iRobot Roomba 870, I couldn't pass it up. The Roomba 870 is surprisingly easy to setup. Simply plug in the home base, remove a couple of plastic and cardboard tabs from the bottom of the roomba and then dock it to the home base. As soon as it's fully charged for the first time, it's ready to do the chore. To start a cleaning session, just press the 'Clean' button in the center to power up, and press it again to start cleaning. You can also schedule cleaning sessions by programming the day of the week and time to start. Perhaps it's my first time to use a vacuuming robot, I was surprised that the Roomba selected its cleaning path in a seemingly unorganized fashion. It would run all over the room, instead of running back and forth in some parallel paths section by section like a human would do with a manual upright vacuum. Nevertheless, it covered 500 square foot of bare floor and area rugs in about half an hour, and finally docked itself at the home base. During the whole cleaning session, I didn't notice the vacuum motor running out of juice (my handheld vacuum would produce an audible drop in power after a short use). For the first session, I had to empty the dust bin twice (a red indicator lights up when the bin is full). The vacuum suction was pretty strong, picking up lots of carpet fibers from our wool and polypropylene area rugs, and pet hair and dirt from the bare floor. The robot would continue to operate when the bin is full. For best results, pause the robot by pressing the 'Clean' button to empty the bin when the bin full indicator lights up and press the 'Clean' button again to resume. During operation, the Roomba circles furniture legs and passes under the sofa when there is enough clearance. It also moves through loose cords and carpet fringes/tassels without tangling up, mainly due to the brushless design of the AeroForce extractors and anti-tangling system (a white anti-tangle indicator lights up when the system kicks in momentarily). However, the spinning side brush did tangle up once with a magic wiggle worm toy inadvertently left on the floor but it was easy to unwind with no damage. I have both very thick and thin rugs and the robot has no problem climbing over them. It will bump into furniture gently. If there are any moveable objects that are light enough, the robot will push them away. It will move past curtains and drapes. It would even move small toys that my kids left on the floor, and our dog's food and water bowls too. iRobot has a Virtual Halo device (sold separately) that sets up a protective zone that would guide the robot around it. Two Auto Virtual Walls and a spare HEPA filter are supplied. The Virtual Walls use two C batteries each and are said to last about 6 months. The Virtual Walls can be used to prevent the robot from entering areas that are off-limits. I use the robot in the family room and put the Virtual Walls at the two doorways that open to the living room. I place them behind one side of each doorway since the emitted blocking IR beam is more of a cone shape. The Roomba is surprising quiet during operation. It averages around 63 dB from a foot away on my cheap SPL meter. When it's operating in the family room, It doesn't bother me when I'm in the same room. I can carry a normal conversation without needing to raise my voice at all. It's becoming more of a background hum when I'm in my living room. It's hardly noticeable when I'm upstairs. The Roomba 870 can automatically clean one room. To clean a different room, you will have to physically carry it there and do a one-time clean (non-scheduled). The Roomba 880 is designed to clean multiple rooms with the Virtual Wall Lighthouses, which use IR signal to guide the 880 through room-to-room cleaning, and self dock when it's all complete. At the time of reviewing, I couldn't find any indication in the documentation or on the support website that the 870 is compatible with the Virtual Wall Lighthouses. With the lack of information, I assume it's not. The Roomba 870 is advertised to be virtually maintenance free. Well, it's almost there, but you still have to: 1) empty the dust bin after each use; 2) clean the HEPA filter once per week, replace every 2 months; 3) clean the AeroForce extractors (the 2 rollers) every 4 months, replace every 12 months; 4) wipe sensors once per week; 5) clean front wheel and spinning side brush once per week; and 6) clean robot and home base contact points once per week See more detail review: Get It Best Price On: |
